4×6 Wood retaining walls are seen on many properties in Calgary as they are a cost effective way to support an area of land from falling to a lower elevation. These types of walls are just as strong as stone or concrete and have a life expectancy of 35 years if built correctly. 4×6 wood retaining walls also provide a more rustic feel to a property and are maintenance free.
4×6 Wood Retaining Wall Contractor
The above picture shows the old failing retaining walls . These were installed 30 years ago with the old anchors rotting away due to limited drainage.
With all the old retaining walls removed we can start the excavation process. On this project we had to remove all the foliage, walls, stairs and the iron fencing on top. We will re-install the fence later.
Here you can see the start of construction with all the main posts cemented in. There were thirty four 4×6 main posts installed for this project.
Main wall construction with the deadman being installed back into the bank.
The main side wall splitting the two properties running for 150 feet. You can see the weed fabric and weeping tile installed prior to installing the drainage rock.
Once the main walls are completed we install 40 mm drainage rock to ensure adequate removal of water and the expandability to not allow the walls to be pushed out by frost heave. You can also see the irrigation lines now installed for platings.
The deadman anchor above shows the main post coming from the 4×6 wood retaining walls and extending back into the bank. Here the anchor is teed with a post at the back of the anchor dug down 4 feet and everything is cemented in with 12 30kg bags of cement. There were 8 anchors installed on the rear retaining walls.
4X6 Posts were used to build the staircase and landings.
We install Nutri loam for all the planting areas. These areas are 16″ deep allowing any type of small to medium shrubs and plantings to grow to a mature size.
Finally the 4×6 wood retaining walls are complete. We installed the old fencing and gate to finish things off . We had to modify the size and changed the gate placement from the original but overall everything looks great.
